The Filipino Community has been given an opportunity to serve at the Faith Café, which is located at the First United Methodist Church, on the corner of Watson & 4th, in Beaverton. The building is adjacent to the Beaverton Library. Our community along with the other parishes (St. Pius X, Holy Trinity Parish, St. Cecilia Church, St. John the Fisher Parish, and San Juan Diego Parish) in our vicariate, and the First United Methodist Church serve the least of our brothers and sisters in the Beaverton area and beyond. The table is the new schedule for the different groups in the Filipino Community. Kindly click the schedule to enlarge it.

Simbang Gabi – Christmas Novena Masses

From December 15^th through the 23^rd, mass begins at 7PM, with the exception of Saturday, December 17^th, mass starts at 5:30PM, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Bishop Kenneth Steiner will preside on the 23^rd.

Rosary will precede a half an hour and refreshments will follow after mass.

This is a Filipino Advent tradition of attending daily mass for nine days before Christmas in preparation for the birth of Christ.

Reconciliation Services will be held on Monday, December 19 and Thursday, December 22. Two of our Filipino Priests, Fr. Maro Escano and Fr. Ysrael Bien will hear confessions from 6:15 PM to 6:50 PM. Everyone are encouraged especially our elderly.

Portland Singing Christmas Tree

Dear kababayans:

Thank you very much to all who came and experienced the Singing Christmas Tree with us. Each year, although it may seem that we may sing the same songs, we really don't because the arrangements are different. Of course, there are standards like Handel's Alleluia -- but even that we put a variation in this year! Do you have a clue how many alto voices I've learned for "Joy to the World" in just the five years I've been on the Tree?

I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you some thoughts stemming from my gratitude for this opportunity to be a part of this 49-year old tradition. First, I have a natural affinity because it was started the year I was born, I never thought growing up that my life would lead me here and that I would be part of something so wonderful.

My best experiences from being a part of The Tree comes NOT from singing on stage, but from meeting and talking to audiences after the shows. The performers have a chance to go do meet-and-greets, and I always beeline toward multi-generational families for short chats. I am always thrilled to know how much The Tree means to them, not just as a show, but as a part of their holiday tradition. I have met people who have come since the very beginning, and find the Tree to literally usher in their Christmas season. I have met people who've walked away with joy in their hearts, even when they walked in with so much sadness and sometimes despair.

We have a preview night (also our tech/dress rehearsal) that we open for free (by invite only) to those people who cannot afford tickets. This year was especially moving, as was addressed in our show, because of all the hardships abound. Jim Boehner (our director) is such an inspirational and moving speaker that he leads us in prayer every week before and after we rehearse. This year, more than any other that I've known, the needs brought forth for prayers have been exponential and serious...but together we are able to provide support and caring and comfort for one another.

Yes, the Singing Christmas Tree is not just a show, but a MINISTRY. The other reason why I embrace it is because it gives me a vision of the POSSIBILITY. This organization began in a tiny church, when a group of people gathered to discuss the possibility of bringing something new to Portland…a Singing Christmas Tree! With optimism, zeal, and lots of faith, these “pioneers” began what has now become a renowned holiday tradition in the City of Portland. And this Christmas, this group will be performing in the World Nativity Festival to be held in Bethlehem at Manger Square on December 27th!

The other day, when people noticed that I gathered the Filipinos in the production for a group picture...a bunch went out of their way to say to me "we are so happy and glad that we have you 'pinecones' -- you LITERALLY add color to The Tree!" And I know for a fact that they meant it with much warmth and sincerity!

So, as we move on to our 50th year, maybe more of you will consider supporting us -- even if not to sing, but to volunteer during our performances, we always need all the behind-the-scenes and front lobby help that we can get!

Rejoice, Christ is Risen! Alleluia!

Would you believe that at Holy Trinity Parish, we had 71 neophytes who were baptized and/or received the Holy Eucharist for the first time. It was a very moving experience for all who attended the Easter Vigil Mass. May we welcome and support all the neophytes in our parishes and let us continue to pray for them. Like us, may they spread the good news of our loving God to others so together, we may give praise and glory to our Risen Christ.

Two of Jesus disciples on their way to Emmaus recognized the Lord in the breaking of the bread. May we encounter the Risen Christ in our lives during this Easter Season so we can know the immense love and mercy reserve for us. At Our Lady of Sorrows Church, we will celebrate the Feast of the Divine Mercy. Four of our Filipino Priests will hear confessions. Fr. Henry Rufo and Fr. Denish Ilogon speak Cebuano while Fr. Cary Reniva and Fr. Rally Bien speak Bicolano. In addition to their own dialects, all of them speak Tagalog and English. We invite you at 2PM, this coming Sunday, May 1^st . May you take this opportunity to receive the healing power of God’s forgiveness during the Divine Mercy Sunday. Imagine this: every year in Portland, our community with our fellow Oregonians gather to celebrate much of what is beautiful, heartbreaking, intelligent, enduring, tragic,surprising, resilient and inspiring in the Filipino culture as seen and as imagined by outstanding Filipino filmmakers. There are few events and venues in the country that attempt to do this, let alone a smaller city – but how cool would it be to have one in Portland!

It can’t happen without you.

In case you have not heard I’m very proud to announce that the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Oregon (PACCO) has successfully won the bid to host the 2011 Bi-National Federation of the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce Convention (FPACC). As this process moves forward and we begin the planning process I wanted to extend an invitation to all the friends of the chamber, our members, board of directors and other local chamber of commerce’s to participate in the planning.

On Friday, November 5, Filipinos for Good Governance are hosting a special event with Dr. Tony La Vina as special guest and speaker and you are invited!

Dr. La Vina is a teacher,thinker, lawyer, social entrepreneur and human rights and environmental advocate who now serves as Dean of the Ateneo School of Government of the Ateneo, Jesuit University in the Philippines. He will be here on Friday to share with all of you some of his insights and experiences on good governance and how people like us can be deeply engaged in the future of our countries beyond politics alone. He will also provide us, Filipino or not, a perspective of the Philippines struggle to move out of poverty and the role of social responsibility and good and ethical governance to make the former happen. His passion for climate change, human rights, ethical leadership and social entrepreneurship will surely make him touch on these issues and from which we could learn a lot.

Tony graduated from Xavier and Ateneo Universities (undergraduate and graduate studies), Univsersity of the Philippines (Law) and Yale University (graduate studies in Law). He is married andhas 3 sons and they live in the Philippines. A deeply prayerful person, you will witness a person whose faith undergirds and defines all the work he has done so far in his life.

Thank you so much everyone who support us on this work! Efren and KB have come and gone from Portland, but our work continues...

Many of you now know of Efren Penaflorida because of his win as CNN Hero in 2009. What people don't know is that the work of Efren has been in existence since 1985, and there is actually a BIGGER MAN (in every sense of the word) behind Efren and the entire Dynamic Teen Company. Efren is a 4th generation mentee, who just happened to be the "face" that represents the work of an entire team of young teenagers.

Aguman-Capampangan Mission, maybe you can look into partnering with this group of young advocates -- they need a lot of support for sustaining their work!! Their youngest advocate started literally doing social work at 7 years old, Kez is now 11 and he actually runs the Kariton Klinic, helping children younger than him with hygiene education and first aid.

FANHS -- Theirs is a story worth following, because although they are not Filipino-Americans, these Filipinos are making an impact globally, and I'm so sure that we will be seeing more of them all!

PSU-Kaibigan -- you are the best candidates for TRUE PARTNERSHIP with the Dynamic Teen Company!

CFAA -- maybe we can set aside a true partnership program with both DTC and GK, considering we have direct/reliable/accountable contacts, and these are programs which now have global exposure and validity. These organizations need our guidance, leadership and support for their sustainance... they ask that we are able to assist in long-term partnerships to help alleviate poverty and restore human dignity, not only to our countrymen, but for the rest of the world who are watching and following our lead!

Can we ever rid of the corruption that riddles the government in the Philippines? Some people are thinking that the current administration may be the rare opportunity of starting a turn-around in this area of concern. Can this new administration actually do it? Many are hopeful, but realize that the government can’t do it alone. The anti-corruption campaign will have to engage all of us, if it to be successful. Hopefully you can come to this forum on November 5, Friday, at 7:30 pm, at St. Therese Catholic Church. The Dean of School of Government of Ateneo, Tony LaVina, will be guest speaker. This is a gentle reminder that Efren Penaflorida will be in Portland this Sunday and Monday, October 31st and November 1st. Efren Penaflorida Jr. is the young Filipino who was honored as 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, for his Classroom Cart Project and Dynamic Teen Company. Since 1997, because of his example and leadership over 10,000 volunteers have taught poor children in slums, who have no access to regular schools.

On Sunday, he is scheduled for a meet-and-greet at St. Clare Parish Hall, 1807 SW Freeman, Portland, OR from 3-5pm.

On Monday, EF's schedule is as follows:
1) AM -- tour of Metro Portland - including Dambana
2) 2:30-3:30pm -- address students of Fowler Middle School in Tigard, 10865 SW Walnut.

In the process, it will enable your child/children to develop a deeper understanding of God’s love and set a foundation of unity among peers and as well as a stronger family bond.

The success of this program largely depends on your involvement, especially after the camp. Together we can help support and provide the youth the proper tools in their walk of faith and eventually have that fulfillment that is only found in Christ. In this regard, we would like to invite all parents of the participants, as well as the parents of the CFC youth service team, to join us in fellowship on the last day of the camp, Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 11:00am to be officiated by our very own Fr. Cary Reniva.

The camp fee for participants and members will be $48.00(incl. 4 meals). *Please note only snacks will be served on the first night of the camp. Registration for the youth camp will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. of the first night, which will be Friday, November 5, 2010.

Please have your child bring the following provisions:

*Clothes for 2 days

*Sleeping Bag, pillow, blanket and toiletries

*Writing materials such as pen and paper

*Bible

*Snacks will be provided, though they can bring their own.

Brothers and Sisters,

After weeks of arduous yet exciting planning, the combined Junior & Senior Kids for Christ camp became a reality last August 21-22 at the Barview Jetty in Rockaway Beach, OR.
Recapping the event, Day 1's program included learning KFC praise and worship action songs, fun games which promoted teambuilding, and activities that enhanced creativity and expression, series of talks - - - about God's love, loving Jesus, loving one another, and knowing more about the Holy Spirit; group dynamics, reflections and writing letters to Jesus. Later in the afternoon, the group went on a trek to the beach, and equipped with gloves and plastic bags, picked up empty cans and plastic bottles as part of KFC's "Eco-friendly and Love for the Environment" activity. Afterwards, it was more fun and play on the beach. The kids showcased their agility and speed going through the obstacle course, tested one another's strength in the Tug o' War, and displayed their nimbleness in the crab walk. It was really touching to hear the laughter and see the joy in kids' faces. Then, it was time for building great sand walls and other sand images. At nighttime, everyone gathered around the firepit where the kids enjoyed roasting marshmallows and smores, and simply stoking the fire. After reciting the Holy Rosary, a comedy skit was presented by the Youth For Christ group and the lone Singles for Christ participant; there were music played which was highlighted by the KFC American Idol hopefuls singing their version of Justin Beiber's "Baby". Day 2's schedule of activities started with a huge breakfast and learning another KFC song. Then, everyone went for a walk in the Sand Play area - a challenging huge hill of sand, even for the young and the physically fit. On our way home, we stopped at the Tillamook Cheese factory for some ice cream treat, sampled different flavors of cheese, and an educational tour of the facility where the group was able to view the actual cheesemaking process.
It was a very eventful and fruitful weekend, an experience that will be etched in the minds and hearts of our KFC camp participants for a long time - - - learning more about Jesus while having fun, bonding with parents, siblings and friends; and, getting affirmation that they truely are special and God's little blessings.

The Parishioners and the Filipino Community will host a welcome reception in the Parish Hall right after his Thanksgiving Mass.

The Filipino Seminarians invited Fr. Joey Frez also to celebrate mass at Mt. Angel Abbey in honor of San Lorenzo Ruiz on Monday, September 27th at 10:00 AM. Brigittine Monks, Dambana Festival & more

Dear Friends & Kababayans,

O’ What a wonderful way to spend a spirit filled weekend! Franz and I along with my two sisters started last Friday by attending the Feast of St. Bridget of Sweden at the Brigittine Monastery in Amity to support our Filipino Monks. Prior Bernard Ner Suquitan along with the two Filipino Postulants, Bro. Marlon and Bro. Angelito welcomed us. Archbishop John G. Vlasny celebrated the beautiful mass and then, blessed their new infirmary. Fr. Ysrael Bien was able to concelebrate along with several priests. The sumptuous food and variety of wines were served during the reception. We brought Philippine dishes to surprise the brother monks and the guests enjoyed it as much also. As you may know the Brigittine Monastery is famous for their Chocolate Fudge. They offered different samples to try and they were all delicious. Their location is very tranquil with wheat farming side by side the road and has a fish pond next to the Priory. It was truly a delight to visit them. If you plan to go to the coast towards Lincoln City, give them a call and stop by. I’m certain they would love to see you. The Brigittine Monastery’s sign on Hwy 18 is big enough, you won’t miss it.

Would you believe that our Filipina Postulant Nun, Sister Agnes Clare at Our Lady of Peace Retreat House professed her vows last Saturday? Bishop Kenneth Steiner celebrated the solemn mass. It was a time of rejoicing for the Filipinos: Fr. Rally Bien, the three Filipino Brigittine monks and several folks in our community witnessed her profession of vows. After the mass, the guests congratulated Sister Agnes Clare who was glowing with joy.

This is truly amazing. The Religious vocation in our community is really growing. Fr. Dave Gutmann of Holy Trinity mentioned two weeks ago that he interviewed three seminarians from the Philippines and he said, “They were all impressive.” He will interview another one in August. These fine young seminarians will serve the Archdiocese of Portland. Last Sunday for the first time I met the four new seminarians: Aniceto Guiriba, Arjie Garcia, Ace Tupazi and Sherwin Belen. They did a pretty good job as acolytes during the Dambana Festival at The Grotto.

Speaking of the Dambana Festival last Sunday, the event was very successful. Even with the hot summer weather, the people endured and avoided the heat by moving to a shaded area during the outdoor mass. The children who prayed the Living Rosary did a wonderful job. The youth and young adult choir sung joyfully under the directions of Ken Canedo and Raquel Naval who did an exquisite job. It was nice to see the teens and the young adults participated in the liturgy as Lectors, Petition Readers and Eucharistic Ministers. The Filipino Servite Brother Vincent served as EM also. The offertory gifts were presented by Simeon & Cording Mamaril, and Steve & Titay Schommer. Fr. Jack Topper welcomed the celebrants and the assembly. Fr. Ysrael Bien proclaimed the Gospel. And Fr. Cary Reniva did an amazing job as he expressed in his homily that the Dambana is not only a symbol of our community but of our deep faith in Jesus as well. During the acknowledgment, Medy Saqueton challenged the assembly to bring additional five guests for our next year celebration. It will be awesome if everyone could do that. After the mass, the refreshments were served at the plaza followed by a fine fellowship. Everyone had a great time. Thank you to our food donors, volunteers, participants and to all who worked hard to make this event a memorable one. You know during the Lord’s Prayer, I was deeply moved when I realized the huge participations of our children in the liturgy. Could imagine how happy our loving God was for bringing our children closer to Him. Let us continue to pray for our children especially the youth that their love for our Lord Jesus and Mama Mary will continue to grow in their hearts.

He did a wonderful job but don’t be surprised if there are bits and pieces that were missed quoted in the article like “At Holy Trinity Parish in Beaverton, Filipinos organize the large Epiphany Party.” What Franz & I organized along with the other Filipinos & the Parish Events Ministry is the International Festival, the grand event that happens every year at Holy Trinity.

Our community continued to serve our marginalized brothers and sisters in Christ at the Faith Café in Beaverton. Last month several members of Couples for Christ prepared the delicious BBQ chicken, baked beans, salad and rolls. The guests enjoyed it and greatly appreciated our community. On August 8th, the Philippine Nurses Association will be serving hamburgers, French fries and fresh fruits. If you would like to volunteer and get to know other folks in the community, feel free to join us. Do you have extra school supplies and want to donate? You may bring it at the Faith Café and we can distribute them to the children of our guests.

Dear Parents,

CFC Kids for Christ would like to invite your children (ages 4-12) to a combined Junior/Senior Kids Camp. The purpose of this camp is to bring the children closer to Jesus and develop good friendships with their brothers and sisters from Kids for Christ and Youth for Christ as they play games, share experiences and entertain one another in a wholesome Christian environment. In this camp, they will discover and be encouraged to develop their gifts and potential for leadership as they are exposed to their peers and the youth who will be actively serving them as speakers, facilitators, and game coordinators. All the activities will be conducted in a safe and controlled environment and will be well-supervised by CFC parents and volunteers.

The camp is scheduled from August 21 - 22 at the Barview Jetty Campground in Rockaway Beach (directions below). The Junior Kids Camp (ages 4-8) will be on August 21st from 8 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The Senior Kids Camp (ages 9-12) will start at 8:00 a.m. on August 21st and conclude at 1:00p.m. on August 22nd. Registration fee for the Senior Kids camp will be $20 per child ($15 for each participating sibling). Registration fee for the Junior Kids camp will be $10. Last day to register will be on Wednesday, August 18th. Early bird registration will be open until Sunday, August 15th - $8 for Jr. kids and $15 for Sr. kids ($12 for each participating sibling).

KFC Oregon Summer Splash!!!

Walking joyfully with the Lord

KFC Oregon's Summer Splash kicked-off this season's outdoor activities last Saturday. The event featured a variety of games such as Simon Says, Animal Farm, relay and Tug o' War; 3 short workshops about being heroes to the community, Family Values, and Faith; and highlighted by the water play where kids and the youth went on a free-for-all shoot-out using their water pistols and high-caliber super-soakers. Even some adults joined the fun and brought out the kid in them. It was truly heart-warming seeing the bliss on the kids' faces.

Although there were a few areas that still need to be improved, Summer Splash was fruitful and very encouraging. It was well-attended as all but one (sick) of those who we were expecting were able to attend. It attracted several new faces and we hope to see those kids in our upcoming events. All the activities were in line with Kids for Christ's "4-F" principles of freedom, fun, friendly and faith.

We want to thank the parents for allowing their kids to participate in the Summer Splash. And to our Brothers and Sisters, YFC members and the KFC service team, thank you for all your help and tremendous support.

Hope you are having a great summer. Last weekend, my family and I went camping and put up 13 tents to accommodate my extended families and friends. The immense view of the ocean, the stunning fireworks, and the beautiful music and stories during campfire are some of my favorite things. Everyone had a fun filled weekend.

As for the youth and the young adults, we encourage them to be part of the mass. The choir will be composed of youth from different parishes and will lead the assembly with joyful songs. The young adults will proclaim the readings and will serve as Eucharistic Ministers and Ushers.

Ysrael Bien is now at St. Cecilia Church in Beaverton and Deacon Angelo Te will serve at Christ the King Church in Clackamas. As for Fr. Cary Reniva, after his first year at the Sacred Heart Parish in Medford, he moved closer to us and his new assignment is at St. Luke Church in Woodburn. Our community is blessed with priestly vocation. Let us pray for them that the Holy Spirit grant them the gifts of wisdom, humility and love to serve well our loving God and to minister joyfully to His people.

Did you know that the Prior of the Brigittine Priory in Amity is a Filipino? Brother Bernard Ner Suquitan was chosen to lead their community last year. He went back to the Philippines in 2009 and invited 2 fine young men to join their community. Now, the Priory of Our Lady of Consolation has two Filipino postulants, 29-year-old Angelito Genon Brazil and 38-year-old Marlon Peñabler Lamigo. They will celebrate the Feast of St. Briget of Sweden on Friday, July 23rd at 11:00 AM with Archbishop Vlasny as the Presider.

It can be said after all the planning and arrangements that the Filipino American National Historical Society’s 13th National Conference Thursday-Saturday, July 22-24, in Seattle will not only be exciting but more so “FANHStastic”!

Some 500 – an educated estimate – from all walks throughout the nation will be on hand at the three-day historical conference at Seattle University. Together they will share with scholars, authors, filmmakers and community researchers Filipino American history and experience with a special focus on the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties, say Timoteo Cordova and Third Andresen, conference co-chairmen.

Conference theme, “A Quest for Emergence: A Retrospective,” will focus on two special segments emerging into the mainstream: “Bridge Generation” with a tribute to the late FANHS’ national president Teresa Jamero, and “Filipino Dance in America” honoring the late dance choreographer-author Reynaldo Alejandro.

Besides scholarly presentations, there’ll be panels, round-table discussions, “how -to” workshops, films, authors reception, exhibits and marketplace display. There’s also an auction at the overbooked Saturday closing dinner.

Yes, the dinner could be “overbooked” because the Campion Ballroom’s 459-seat allocation - if everyone who has said they’re coming - will be filled.

This Saturday (July 24) festive dinner features the former lieutenant governor of California, Simeona (Mona) Viernes Pasquil, as guest speaker. The third-generation Pinay from Sacramento is the first woman - more importantly the first Filipino American - to have become California’s second-leading chief executive.

Also at the dinner will be President Obama’s health care activist in 11-year-old Marcelas Owens.

In attendance not only at the dinner but all during the conference days will be a bevy of Filipino America’s top personalities in literature, arts and entertainment, education, academia, media, community, plus student university governance.

Beginning Wednesday (July 21) - one day before the opening of the conference, a Historical Seattle Bus Tour with two buses will follow a 27-site route. This tour will be followed with a visit to the National Pinoy Archives in the FANHS National Office.

A welcome reception follows in the Immaculate Parish hall with hoe-down Pinoy food. The menu: pigtail adobo, pinakbet, mungo, salmon and venison, desserts with a 150-pound pig to be roasted on-sight for the lechon, courtesy of the FANHS Yakama Valley Chapter.

Thursday will be Authors Reception at Campion, followed by the Philippine Dance Extravaganza in honor of Reynaldo Alejandro in Pigott Auditorium. Among those featured will be the Visayan Youth Rondalla of Kodiak, Alaska, plus the leading Filipinas Performing Arts of Washington State and the Pilipino American Youth Organization (PAYO).

“Dance Down Memory Lane” on Friday will feature famed Seattle-based Primo Kim Villarruz and his band with his 1940s swing, Latin and Blues. Also on the bill is Tamaraw, reconcocting its rock band artisans with 1970s Latin funk. The event, reflecting the history of Filipino American dance bands, in a partial tribute to Terri Jamero. Terri, a FANHS founding charter member, was a fan of the music in the 1940s and 1950s.

This national conference’s co-sponsor is the Seattle University Filipino Alumni Chapter. Other supporters are the Seattle Central Community College’s Continuing and Professional Education, FANHS’ Yakama Valley and Seattle Chapters and Filipino Community of Seattle.

The San Francisco Philippine Consulate, Office of the Consul General publicly announced that a reaching-out program known as Consular On Wheels to assist Filipino Americans who wish to apply for dual citizenship, renew or apply for a new passport, and, would avail of any consular services, such as, notarization, filing of affidavits and other legal services, shall be at the River Valley Inn, Eugene, Oregon from August 13-14, 2010.
This event would also include travel and tourism in the Philippines to be introduced by a Representative of the Department of Tourism.And, a five-member staff would assist and help in the processing of applications, and, legal services headed by Consul General Marciano Paynor, Jr. For those who would be applying or renewing Philippine passport, the requirements are: NSO certified birth record or the old passport, 2 x 2 photos(2 pcs.) with royal blue background, application form(which could be downloaded from the SF website, or filing at the site) and other supporting documents to identify the applicant. For dual citizenship the requirements are: Certificate of Naturalization, a US passport, 2 x 2 photo ID(2 pcs.) with royal blue background, NSO certified birth certificate, or Marriage Certificate showing that one of the parents of the applicant is a Filipino. All fees will be known at the site, or please see SF Phil. Consulate's website. As for the latter, the mass oath-taking will be on the night of August 14. Others who wish to personally have one may avail on a case-to-case basis. This event coincides with the convention of the Council of Filipino American Association which will be on August 14. The convention will hold a meeting of all affiliate members and will feature Philippines Cuisine Cooking Lessons, Phillippine Dances, Conflict Management and etc..Registration for this affair is $25 person; $45 for registration and lunch; and, $60 for lunch-dinner-dance, featuring the Manila's Band. In the past few weeks, our community Palm Sunday Service was held at St. Vincent the Paul Church in Salem, presided by Fr. Henry Rufo. It was a beautiful service and as usual delicious food and fine fellowship. Then, the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus wowed everyone with their remarkable performance; even the Mayor of Vancouver, WA is impressed. This event drew a large crowd and filled the big auditorium of the Skyview High School. At the end of their presentations, the crowd gave them a standing ovation. The FilAm Clark County hosted this affair through the excellent leadership of Eric Tadeo.

The Holy Trinity Filipino Community served at the Faith Café last night and made several folks happy with the food they prepared and served for our least fortunate brothers and sisters in Christ in the Beaverton area and beyond. Job well done!

This event will benefit their medical mission in the Philippines. Deacon Rally Bien, Deacon Joey Frez, and Derf Gucor will receive their Masters in Divinity while Manolito Jaldon and Jeremy Santos will receive their Bachelor Degrees in Philosophy. Only one of these five fine men, Deacon Rally will serve in the Portland Archdiocese and will be ordained to Priesthood on June 5th, at 11:00 am in the St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1716 NW Davis Street, Portland, OR 97209. His Thanksgiving Mass will be held the following day, June 6th, at 11:00 AM at the Resurrection Catholic Church, 21060 SW Stafford Road, Tualatin, OR 97062. Deacon Joey Frez will be ordained to the Priesthood for the Diocese of Salt Lake City on Saturday, May 29th at 10:00 am in The Cathedral of the Madeleine, Salt Lake City, Utah. His Thanksgiving Mass will be held on May 30, 2010 at 1:30 PM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1085 East 700 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84012. Derf Gucor will be ordained as a Deacon in October for the Sacramento Diocese and later on will be ordained as a priest. Manolito Jaldon will continue his study at St. Patrick Seminary in San Francisco and Jeremy Santos in Sacramento, CA. In addition, Angelo Te will be ordained as a Deacon for the Archdiocese of Portland on May 29th. However his ordination will be held in the Philippines so his old age parents could witness this momentous event. Our community has been blessed for priestly vocation of these fine seminarians and we are proud of them. Please let us continue to pray for them and to encourage them to serve God and their future parishes with a joyful and loving hearts.

May 2 - Special Mass for the intentions of clean and honest elections in the philippines

"On May 2, Filipinos in Oregon will stand in solidarity with the rest of the Filipino people here in the US and other parts of the world in praying for CLEAN and HONEST elections in the Philippines on May 10. This is a crucial time for the Philippines and the future of our heritage as Filipinos. Although we may differ in our choices for candidates and parties, it is no reason for division - for we can still come together as UNITED Filipinos in invoking the Holy Spirit for the truth, prudence and honesty to prevail during and after the elections.

On May 2, We ask all of you, your friends and families, to come to a Mass that will be offered for the intentions of the election at THE GROTTO, in Portland at 12noon. We would like to see as many Filipinos at this Mass so we can show our oneness but more importantly the power of prayer through the collected and unified plea of the people.

If you cannot make it to the Mass on May 2 at The Grotto, we ask that you pray for this intention in your parishes or congregational worship services, aloud or in silence - "For clean and honest election in the upcoming national elections in the Philippines, may God guide this process and allow the rightful, just and honest winner to emerge, we pray to our God."

The celebration last Saturday at Our Lady of Sorrows officiated by Archbishop Vlasny was a big success. The relic of St. Therese was blessed. The children wearing the St. Therese's costumes were so graceful during their liturgical dances in the mass. The church was packed with parishioners and guests all over the Portland Metro Area. The reception was done in the gym and everyone had a nice fellowship.

We are grateful to the parishioners of St. Clare Parish for serving at the Faith Café last Sunday.

This is our Third Week of Lent and our journey is in the right path in reaching out to our community. Friday, March 12th at 6PM, we will serve at the St. Cecilia Church Soup Supper in Beaverton. Couples for Christ Ministry will prepare the food and serve the guests in the gym. Stations of the Cross and Benediction will follow in the church.

The Annual Pilgrimage for the Stations of the Cross at Mt. Angel Abbey will be held on Sunday, March 14th at 2:30 PM. We will be doing the prayer service in the St. Joseph's Chapel under the main church and a potluck reception will be followed in the Aquinas Refectory for our fellowship. ALL are Welcome.

Cynthia, the owner grew up in the Ilocos region before moving to Hawaii. About 3 years ago they moved to Oregon. They opened the restaurant about a year ago and serve the typical Filipino dishes like, kare-kare, caldereta, pinakbit, dinuguan, ginataan, fried whole Telapia fish, minudo, adobo and many more. Capstone Presentation at Mount Angel Seminary

Hello everyone.

Attached is the flyer for my Capstone Presentation on Tuesday, March 16 at 4pm in the Abbey Church at Mount Angel Seminary.

At this presentation, I will present my original musical compositions. One of which will be an entire Mass Setting entitled Mass of the Annunciation. It is written to the next texts soon to be released for our liturgy.

Join an ensemble of instrumentalist and a choir of seminarians, Religious, and Professors as we embark on a journey of music making.

UP Concert 2010

Hi, folks!

The University of the Philippines Concert Chorus will be in town in April. See attached flier. The Concert will be on April 11, A Sunday, at 4 pm, at Skyview High School in Vancouver. For those who have not seen/heard them, check out the attached profile, and better yet, come to the concert and see how good the group is. World-class, internationally award-winning choir that enhances its performances with exquisite choreography.

Skyview high school is the best auditorium of its size in Vancouver, regularly used by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. We are fortunate to have this excellent venue for this concert.

Beloved Friends and kababayans,

Happy Lenten Season! Today, Ash Wednesday is the beginning of our Lenten Journey. Masses were celebrated this morning and there will be more celebration in many different churches. The people were marked with ashes on their foreheads to prepare their hearts to receive the grace of God during this Holy Season. At Holy Trinity, the mass will be held at 7PM tonight.

Our community will host the St. Cecilia’s Soup Supper on Friday, March 12th at 6PM.

The Annual Pilgrimage for the Stations of the Cross at Mt. Angel Abbey will be held on Sunday, March 14th at 2:30 PM. We will be doing the prayer service in the St. Joseph's Chapel under the Church and a potluck reception will be followed in the St. Aquinas hall for our fellowship.

The 2nd Annual GSFAA Valentine's Party Dinner & Dance was a great success last Saturday hosted by the folks in Salem with the fine leaderships of John Alamarez and Maryann Gaviola. It was a well attended event.

“Working together, then, we appeal to you to not receive the grace of God in vain.” 2 Cor. 6:1
The Infinite Blessings of God be upon you and all you met and pray for and this entire world as we begin Our 2010 Lenten journey together! I say “together” because we are on this journey to heaven together, helping each other to fully receive the grace of God, which perfects us in the image of Jesus. Imagine being one with Jesus who shines with boundless love!

May these reflections and this Holy Season in our church be a cause for valuable and specific growth in our spiritual lives. For the daily reflections, I am going with the format of a short challenge (I will try my best to be brief!!!) from the chosen Scripture verse and a prayer response. Sound good? OK, here we go…

Grace from the get-go. All of life is grace. We are made by grace, being saved by grace and grace will bring us to perfection in heaven. It is not what we do for heaven it is what heaven has done for us! This whole, Holy Season is about preparing our hearts to receive the grace of God. Jesus is the grace of God who has come to bring a broken world into the perfection of his boundless love.

Write down the grace. Name it. How is it that you are? How is it that you are forgiven? How is it that, for the Christian, death has no more sting? What has freed you from confusion, fear, selfishness and hatred and made you joyful?

Let us pray: “Lord God, you made me out of nothing so that I could live in your love forever. Help me to name and know and dance and sing your grace each moment of my life. Open the eyes of my heart to see that all of life is grace from the get-go. Amen”

Farewell to Fr. Biong

Peace!

Fr. Biong is leaving for the Philippines on Feb. 25 after several months of service at the Grotto. After the 10:00 Sunday Mass on Feb. 21, 2010, there will be a reception at the conference center. The Grotto will provide coffee, tea, cake/cookies, fruits and we can add whatever food we can prepare.

Please spread the word and invite your friends, family and relatives to the Mass and reception to show our gratitude to Fr. Biong. Thanks.
