Super Typhoon -Ondoy hits Philippines

A boy is lifted onto the roof of a building to escape the flooding in the Quezon City suburban of Manila . Nearly a month's worth of rain fell in just six hours Saturday, triggering the worst flooding in the Philippine capital in 42 years, which stranded thousands on rooftops in the city and elsewhere.

Here in the capital, countless people remained on the roofs of their houses, where they had spent the night, drenched and unable to come down because of the floodwaters that had accumulated since the rain began falling Friday evening. The death toll was expected to rise sharply as more reports of casualties came in from provinces outside of Manila.

Tropical Storm Ketsana, packing 53-mile-per-hour winds, dumped nearly 17 inches of rain in just 12 hours, said Nathaniel Cruz, the government’s chief weather forecaster.

Officials said nearly 300,000 people were displaced by the storm; tens of thousands were brought to evacuation centers in schools, churches, gymnasiums and public parks. In Marikina City, a Manila suburb, people pitched tents wherever they could, some on the bridge across the overflowing Marikina River.

The storm “submerged up to 80 percent” of Manila, according to the environmental groupGreenpeace.

“It was terrifying to see the water rising, especially because there were live electrical wires around us,” said Diverson Bloso Jr., a waiter at a restaurant in Quezon City that was one of many flooded businesses. “There were trash and rats and cockroaches all around us.”

King Catoy, a filmmaker, rushed to Marikina City, where he recorded scenes of devastation: streets and houses covered in muck, people washing salvaged belongings in the murky river, a couple holding their five dogs — the only ones left with them after the storm.

“Marikina City always prided itself of being the most orderly, the cleanest and the most prepared city in the whole country,” Mr. Catoy said. Ketsana, he said, “showed that all that may have been just a facade.”

October 3 reception for Philippine government officials

Hello!

You might be interested to come to this reception. The planned CFAA convention could not happen this year, and we are having this reception instead. This is a reception for our guests – the Philippine consul from San Francisco (and some of his staff) and the commissioner of Trade and Investment. It should be a great ‘meet and greet’ (and dine) opportunity. Good time to have a little conversation about matters of interest to us.

If you can come, please let me know right away, send in a check ($33 per person; to me or any of the 4 of us – Jet, Marisa or Mina; or Nanding Macalino) as we need to give Sheraton a good headcount by Sept 30.

Thanks.

Enrico

SPECIAL THANKS
We, the Filipino Community of Holy Trinity Parish are grateful to everyone who worked hard to make our Fifth Penafrancia Festival a success. Through your generous support and presence, this occasion had been a joyful and memorable one. We thank those who provided assistance, food and entertainment for our reception. We acknowledge all the participants in the liturgy of the Mass and for all the children who offered their prayers in honor of our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Penafrancia, our INA during the Living Rosary. They prayed also for our Archdiocesan Priests in the Portland area as a tribute to the “Year of the Priests.” Our gratitude goes to all the Filipino Seminarians at Mt. Angel Abbey for sharing their gifts of music to our community. We are grateful to Rev. Maro Escano, Rev. Beda Martinez, Rev. Tony Ong and Rev. Dave Gutmann for concelebrating, and to Rev. Cary Reniva our main celebrant, for sharing his wisdom and for guiding our process.

Maraming Salamat Po and God bless us!

CFC Youth Foundation for Family and Life Camp

Dear Parents and Family in Christ:

Peace be with you!

CFC-YFL wish to invite your child/children or your friend's children to attend a youth camp on Nov 6, 7 and 8, 2009.

The Youth Camp is the entry point to the CFC-YFL, a youth ministry of Couples for Christ Foundation for Family and Life. It is an experience that will allow your child/children the opportunity to know Jesus Christ in a personal way and build Christian friendships with other young adults both in High School and in College levels. This will be achieved through a program consisting of talks and personal sharing by our young adults, as well as fun-filled activities utilizing the talents and skills of the participants. In the process, it will enable your child/children to develop a deeper understanding of God’s love and set a foundation of unity among peers and as well as a stronger family bond.

The success of this program largely depends on your involvement, especially after the camp. Together we can help support and provide the youth the proper tools in their walk of faith and eventually have that fulfillment that is only found in Christ. In this regard, we would like to invite all parents of the participants, as well as the parents of the CFC youth service team, to join us in fellowship on the last day of the camp, Sunday, November 8, 2009. We will send another email with the time we expect you to arrive at the camp.

The camp fee for participants and members will be $75.00(incl. 4 meals). *Please note only snacks will be served on the first day of the camp. Registration for the youth camp will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. of the first day, which will be Friday, Nov 6, 2009.

Please have your child bring the following provisions:
*Clothes for 2 days
*Sleeping Bag, pillow, blanket and toiletries
*Writing materials such as pen and paper
*Bible
*Snacks will be provided, though they can bring their own.

We are looking forward to seeing you and your child/children at the camp. Any questions or need for additional information, please feel free to contact us. Thank you and God Bless.

In His Service,

Chris and Marissa Leung
