Gawad Kalinga founder promotes GK’s concept & vision in Toronto

The major direction of Gawad Kalinga is to look at the poor in the Philippines with respect and justice and at the same time, to build more houses for the poor for the next years to come, according to Antonio M. Meloto, GK's founder. Meloto who was in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on October28 to October 29, 2010, said that the rich and wealthy people in the country are now starting to embrace the poor by donating lands for the Gawad Kalinga for which houses will be constructed for the people families…

GK villages in Iloilo to hold 1st X’mas tree

Nine Gawad Kalinga (GK) villages will be spruced up for the Christmas season with the holding of the 1st Iloilo Gawad Kalinga (GK) Mabuhay Design Contest. The contest aims to promote the 5K values of GK Mabuhay, namely, Kagandahan, Kayamanan, Kapamilya, Kasiyahan, and Karangalan; promote GK awareness for all; and to intensify unity among “kapitbahayans” (neighborhood).The contest organizers held their initial meeting last Nov. 8 in the presence of provincial First Lady Cosette R. Defensor.The contest involves the making of a Christmas tree to be displayed in the prominent area of the respective GK villages…

Currently a bum droning in the quarter-life crisis hive, I tagged along with my GK-community nurse friend, Carmz Lopez, with the objective of wanting to help build roofs and paint walls. As a first-time builder, together with the other 150+ volunteers, we stowed away with our heavy bags, camp gear, and likely a few doubts on how safe the place is or if we could really finish building the roofs. Those paraded our minds on board the 12-hour road trip to Tumauini, and then we fell asleep…

On Friday, November 5, Filipinos for Good Governance are hosting a special event with Dr. Tony La Vina as special guest and speaker and you are invited!

Dr. La Vina is a teacher,thinker, lawyer, social entrepreneur and human rights and environmental advocate who now serves as Dean of the Ateneo School of Government of the Ateneo, Jesuit University in the Philippines. He will be here on Friday to share with all of you some of his insights and experiences on good governance and how people like us can be deeply engaged in the future of our countries beyond politics alone. He will also provide us, Filipino or not, a perspective of the Philippines struggle to move out of poverty and the role of social responsibility and good and ethical governance to make the former happen. His passion for climate change, human rights, ethical leadership and social entrepreneurship will surely make him touch on these issues and from which we could learn a lot.

Tony graduated from Xavier and Ateneo Universities (undergraduate and graduate studies), Univsersity of the Philippines (Law) and Yale University (graduate studies in Law). He is married andhas 3 sons and they live in the Philippines. A deeply prayerful person, you will witness a person whose faith undergirds and defines all the work he has done so far in his life.

COME and listen to Dr. Tony La Vina and learn a little bit more about his work, the work for change inthe Philippines and the value of good governance in the future of nations.

More on Efren

Thank you so much everyone who support us on this work! Efren and KB have come and gone from Portland, but our work continues...

Many of you now know of Efren Penaflorida because of his win as CNN Hero in 2009. What people don't know is that the work of Efren has been in existence since 1985, and there is actually a BIGGER MAN (in every sense of the word) behind Efren and the entire Dynamic Teen Company. Efren is a 4th generation mentee, who just happened to be the "face" that represents the work of an entire team of young teenagers.

Mimi, Cindy, and all others who weren't able to meet Ef and KB personally, I'm hoping we will someday soon invite their entire group to Portland for a longer stay... that's my future goal!

Aguman-Capampangan Mission, maybe you can look into partnering with this group of young advocates -- they need a lot of support for sustaining their work!! Their youngest advocate started literally doing social work at 7 years old, Kez is now 11 and he actually runs the Kariton Klinic, helping children younger than him with hygiene education and first aid.

FANHS -- Theirs is a story worth following, because although they are not Filipino-Americans, these Filipinos are making an impact globally, and I'm so sure that we will be seeing more of them all!

PSU-Kaibigan -- you are the best candidates for TRUE PARTNERSHIP with the Dynamic Teen Company!

CFAA -- maybe we can set aside a true partnership program with both DTC and GK, considering we have direct/reliable/accountable contacts, and these are programs which now have global exposure and validity. These organizations need our guidance, leadership and support for their sustainance... they ask that we are able to assist in long-term partnerships to help alleviate poverty and restore human dignity, not only to our countrymen, but for the rest of the world who are watching and following our lead!

Good Governance in the Philippines - Forum on November 5, 2010

Hello,

Can we ever rid of the corruption that riddles the government in the Philippines? Some people are thinking that the current administration may be the rare opportunity of starting a turn-around in this area of concern. Can this new administration actually do it? Many are hopeful, but realize that the government can’t do it alone. The anti-corruption campaign will have to engage all of us, if it to be successful. Hopefully you can come to this forum on November 5, Friday, at 7:30 pm, at St. Therese Catholic Church. The Dean of School of Government of Ateneo, Tony LaVina, will be guest speaker. He is in New York for a speaking engagement, and we requested him to reroute is trip so he can drop by here and talk to us.
