Lenten Services and more

Dear Friends & Kababayans,

The celebration last Saturday at Our Lady of Sorrows officiated by Archbishop Vlasny was a big success. The relic of St. Therese was blessed. The children wearing the St. Therese's costumes were so graceful during their liturgical dances in the mass. The church was packed with parishioners and guests all over the Portland Metro Area. The reception was done in the gym and everyone had a nice fellowship.

We are grateful to the parishioners of St. Clare Parish for serving at the Faith Café last Sunday.

This is our Third Week of Lent and our journey is in the right path in reaching out to our community. Friday, March 12th at 6PM, we will serve at the St. Cecilia Church Soup Supper in Beaverton. Couples for Christ Ministry will prepare the food and serve the guests in the gym. Stations of the Cross and Benediction will follow in the church.

The Annual Pilgrimage for the Stations of the Cross at Mt. Angel Abbey will be held on Sunday, March 14th at 2:30 PM. We will be doing the prayer service in the St. Joseph's Chapel under the main church and a potluck reception will be followed in the Aquinas Refectory for our fellowship. ALL are Welcome.

Remember Manolito Jaldon Jr, one of our seminarians at Mt. Angel will have a Capstone Presentation at Mt. Angel on Tuesday, March 16th at 4 PM. For more information, kindly click this link http://filcomevents.blogspot.com/2010/03/capstone-presentation-at-mount-angel.html.

The monthly schedule mass in Salem happens to be the Palm Sunday Service and will be held at St. Vincent Church on Sunday, March 28th, at 4:00 PM. Please click this http://filcomevents.blogspot.com/2010/03/palm-sunday-service.html for detailed information.

After the Lenten Season, the University of the Philippines Concert Chorus will be performing here in the Northwest. The Concert will be on April 11, Sunday, at 4 pm, at Skyview High School in Vancouver, Washington. Had several opportunities in the past to watch this choir and gazed in awe when they’ve performed. You can read their profile by clicking this link: http://filcomevents.blogspot.com/2010/02/up-concert-2010.html.

This year's NWFASA - Northwest Filipino American Student Alliance Conference will be held at Portland State University on April 9-11, 2010, hosted by PSU Kaibigan. Click for more info, http://filcomevents.blogspot.com/2010/03/vendororg-tabling-form-for-nwfasa.html.

Patronize our kababayans:

Did you know that there is a Filipino Restaurant off Hwy 26? It is located on the corner of Cornel Road and Murray Boulevard and is called Bobalicous. Cynthia, the owner grew up in the Ilocos region before moving to Hawaii. About 3 years ago they moved to Oregon. They opened the restaurant about a year ago and serve the typical Filipino dishes like, kare-kare, caldereta, pinakbit, dinuguan, ginataan, fried whole Telapia fish, minudo, adobo and many more. If you happen to be in the area, come and visit them. The food is delicious and the price is reasonable.

If you are looking for a good Filipino dentist, Dr. Margarita DeLeon has an office located by Walker Road called Cedar Hills Dental. It is across from Sunset Bowling Lane. I’ve learned about her from our good pastor last summer. Now, she is taking care of me and my family’s dental needs. The office has a family atmosphere, new technology all around and you can even watch TFC while they are working on you. You will enjoy it too once you see the place and meet her. The contact information of Dr. Margarita De Leon is below:

Lenten Services

Beloved Friends and kababayans,

Happy Lenten Season! Today, Ash Wednesday is the beginning of our Lenten Journey. Masses were celebrated this morning and there will be more celebration in many different churches. The people were marked with ashes on their foreheads to prepare their hearts to receive the grace of God during this Holy Season. At Holy Trinity, the mass will be held at 7PM tonight.

Are you wondering what is going on in our community? Well, the 2010 Calendar of Events is now posted in our blog, click this link: http://filcomevents.blogspot.com/2010/02/2010-calendar-of-events.html.

The 2nd Annual GSFAA Valentine's Party Dinner & Dance was a great success last Saturday hosted by the folks in Salem with the fine leaderships of John Alamarez and Maryann Gaviola. It was a well attended event.

“Working together, then, we appeal to you to not receive the grace of God in vain.” 2 Cor. 6:1
The Infinite Blessings of God be upon you and all you met and pray for and this entire world as we begin Our 2010 Lenten journey together! I say “together” because we are on this journey to heaven together, helping each other to fully receive the grace of God, which perfects us in the image of Jesus. Imagine being one with Jesus who shines with boundless love!

May these reflections and this Holy Season in our church be a cause for valuable and specific growth in our spiritual lives. For the daily reflections, I am going with the format of a short challenge (I will try my best to be brief!!!) from the chosen Scripture verse and a prayer response. Sound good? OK, here we go…

Grace from the get-go. All of life is grace. We are made by grace, being saved by grace and grace will bring us to perfection in heaven. It is not what we do for heaven it is what heaven has done for us! This whole, Holy Season is about preparing our hearts to receive the grace of God. Jesus is the grace of God who has come to bring a broken world into the perfection of his boundless love.

Write down the grace. Name it. How is it that you are? How is it that you are forgiven? How is it that, for the Christian, death has no more sting? What has freed you from confusion, fear, selfishness and hatred and made you joyful?

Let us pray: “Lord God, you made me out of nothing so that I could live in your love forever. Help me to name and know and dance and sing your grace each moment of my life. Open the eyes of my heart to see that all of life is grace from the get-go. Amen”

We are all Blessed by the BEST- all the time,
+Fr. John

Stations of the Cross

Do you still remember when we visited Mt. Angel during this time of the year? The serenity of the place, the prayerful atmosphere when we did the 14 stations of the cross? Some of us were given an opportunity to lead the reading of the stations and reminding us The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ during this Lenten Season. Once again, on Sunday March 22nd, different groups in our community will gather in the chapel of St. Joseph along with the seminarians to do the stations. Afterwards, we will have a potluck reception in the Damian Center for our fellowship. Our Kababayans from the Portland Metro Area are requested to bring main dishes while Salem will bring desserts. For detailed information, kindly see below email from Manolito.

Dear Friends of the Portland Archdiocese:

Lent is quickly approaching and it is that time of the year when we make our pilgrimage to Mount Angel Seminary for the stations of the cross.

This year's prayerful event will be hosted by the Filipino Seminarians.

We will gather for a holy hour of prayer on Sunday, March 22 at 2:30pm at Saint Joseph's Chapel underneath the Seminary Abbey. There we will pray before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, journey through the Stations in the chapel, which are unique to our seminary, hear a reflection, and have benediction.

This will be a time where the people of Portland Metro Area, Salem, and seminarians can gather as one community and lift our hearts and minds to God.

We will have a light reception hosted by friends in the Portland Metro Area, Salem, and the seminarians immediately after our holy hour.

Attached is a flyer for this event. Please assist me in spreading the word.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Manolito

Soup Supper

The Filipino Community hosted the Soup Supper last night and it was a fun event. It was nice to see several familiar faces during the soup supper at St. Cecilia's gym. Afterwards the "Stations of the Cross" was held in the church and it ended with Benediction.

Thanks to the CFC Ministry members, St. Cecilia Filipino Parishioners, some Filipino Parishioners from Holy Trinity who donated the food, prepared and cooked the vegi soup and clam chowder, served the food, did the setup and cleanup. The guests enjoyed the delicious soups, the warm rolls, the cool apple juice and the hot coffee. Some of them even had seconds.

Thank you for a job well done. The donations will go towards the Dambana Project.
