Happy Thanksgiving

Letter from the President
Dear Friends,

A blessed Thanksgiving to all!

The events of the past few months run the gamut of human experience. In the worst flooding in 40 years, we saw death and destruction, but we also saw kindness, compassion and unfathomable generosity. We saw Manny Pacquaio and CNN Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida bring tremendous honor to our country – one for his prowess in sport; the other for his quiet but determined work to educate children in the poverty-stricken areas of Cavite.

Just a few days ago, we have been confronted with the most despicable crimes in recent memory in the Maguindanao massacre which resulted in the killing of at least 57 innocent Filipinos – unarmed women, lawyers, journalists, and civilians going about their daily lives.

How do we deal with this tragedy of monumental proportions? It was the German poet Rainier Maria Rilke who said, to endure is all. But surely there is more to life than enduring. We celebrate the triumph of spirit that Manny Pacquiao and Efren Penaflorida exemplify. We try to learn from the lessons of Ondoy and Pepeng in order to re-orient our urban planning to take into consideration the limits of development and the need to respect the laws of nature. The recent massacre, we can only hope, will strengthen our resolve to demand accountability from our leaders to end the culture of impunity that political exploitation and warlordism have spawned. Our weapons against such wanton display of power is education, the reduction of poverty, the inculcation of moral values, the strengthening of our democratic institutions, and the election of servant leaders through a truly honest and clean election in May 2010.

In this season of thanksgiving, let us pause for a moment to thank the good Lord for giving us our lives, our family, and all the blessings He has bestowed upon us. Let us also respond to His call to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, educate the children, shelter the homeless. You may wish to visit our website at http://www.af-usa.org/ to choose a project that will feed one child, educate a student, heal a sick person, plant a tree, or provide a home for a family.

Perhaps our individual acts of kindness and generosity, no matter how small, will spark the flame of compassion, of caring, of giving, of sharing, and of loving our fellow Filipinos.

Mabuhay and God bless!

Sincerely,

Victoria P. Garchitorena

FilCom Advent Schedule and more ....

Dear Friends and Kababayans,

Hope you are keeping yourselves warm and healthy!

A week from Thursday, most of the people in our nation will celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday with families and friends. This is the proper occasion for everyone to give thanks for all the good things that God has showered in our lives. To show our gratitude, make sure to take time and whisper in the silence of our hearts how much we are grateful and love God. It usually brings contentment, peace and joy in our souls. At Holy Trinity, we usually celebrate mass at 9:00 am on Thanksgiving Day. For directions, click http://www.h-t.org.

You may think it is not yet time for Christmas carols, but two weeks ago, we watched an exceptional “Winter Magic Concert” of Janet Chvatal and Marc Gremm at Holy Trinity. The full house event was inspiring and amazing. Speaking of concert, the Portland Singing Christmas Tree will start their performances the day after Thanksgiving. Heard there are 9 Filipinos who are part of the Singing Christmas Tree and 8 of them, we see in our community events: Raquel Naval, Cecile Agamata, & Jo Cooley from Holy Trinity, Derick & Annie Maglalang from St. Francis, Dolly & Jae Specht from St. Clare, and Louisa Stevenson from Christ the King. About 5 years ago, my oldest son joined the group and since then, we always make a plan to watch it because we enjoy it so much. For more information, kindly click this link http://www.singingchristmastree.org/dates_and_times.html. It is a worthwhile event to watch and you’ll experience Christmas in a more meaningful way. And have you heard of the Mt Angel Seminarians Christmas Concert? It will be held on Saturday, December 12th, at 7:30 PM at St. Clare Parish, 8535 SW 19th Avenue, Portland, 97219. It will be an evening of celebrating the joy of Christmas with songs, stories and prayers. Please click this link for more info http://filcomevents.blogspot.com/2009/11/seminarians-christmas-concert.html.

Advent is my favorite time of the year. Preparations are on the way for our Advent celebrations. You are cordially invited to celebrate the Simbang Gabi – Christmas Novena Masses starting on Tuesday, December 15th, at 7:00 PM, at Holy Trinity Parish in Beaverton. The culmination of the Christmas Novena masses will be celebrated by Bishop Kenneth Steiner on December 23rd and will have a short Christmas program. Several priests from the Archdiocese of Portland have generously given their time to preside during the liturgies. In the Eastside of the metro area, the Simbang Gabi will be held at St. Therese Church in Portland. Like last year, the Filipino Servite Priest at The Grotto, Fr. Denish Ilogon will be the main celebrant for all the masses. Please click this link http://filcomevents.blogspot.com/2009/11/simbang-gabi-christmas-novena-2009.html for detailed information.

The Filipino Community in Salem holds monthly Filipino Masses at St. Vincent Catholic Church every last Sunday of the month at 5:00 PM. On November 29th, the First Sunday of Advent mass will be celebrated by Rev. Henry Rufo and on December 27th, the Feast of the Holy Family will be held. For more info, click this link http://filcomevents.blogspot.com/2009/11/pilipino-mass-first-sunday-of-advent.html

Looking ahead below is a list of other events going on in our community and you’ll find more information on our website http://filcomevents.blogspot.com

2009 Christmas Party Invitation

Hi members and friends,

It is with joy and excitement for the children that we invite you to the annual Christmas program. Invite your extended family and friends. Last year our best reward was seeing awe in the children’s eyes as they saw Santa Claus coming out of the glass elevator of the Cafeteria Mall of PCC. Let the children experience once more the wonder of Christmas.

The two attachments say it all.

Funeral Service for Norma Margaret (Mae) Europa

Dear Friends,

Happy autumn! This afternoon, looking through the windows, it always amazed me on the beauty of the colorful autumn leaves on the trees in our backyard. The birds were devouring the left over fruits on the branches of the trees as though they were feasting. They flew in different formation as though they were putting a show just for me. I bet, they were also singing and praising our loving God with all the tweeting I heard in the pleasant atmosphere. We are so blessed to have four seasons in the northwest.

About two weeks ago, one of the Carmelite nuns visiting from the Philippines was in such awe when I brought her at The Grotto. Even though the climate was a little cold for her, she enjoyed the scenery because of the lovely landscape, the tall pine trees, and the colorful leaves. Everywhere we turned, the view is like what you see on the postcards. The little fog here and there and the rays of the sun peeking through, it felt so serene like in heaven and we could not help but to give praise and glory to our God.

In the calmness of our souls sometimes there are tragedies that come in our ways. One of the young adult parishioner at Holy Trinity passed away a week from this Friday. Norma Margaret Europa is fondly known as Mae by everyone. She is the youngest child of MarJoe and Helen Europa and RJ is her only brother. Mae is every parent’s dream as a daughter. She is pretty, loving, very active, has a joyful spirit and most of all she has a strong faith. Her untimely death shocked everyone in her family. She graduated from Aloha High School last year and just turned 20 years old two days before she died. Her funeral service schedule is as follows:

Norma Margaret (Mae) Europa’s Funeral Service Schedule

Viewing and Rosary – 6:30 PM
Friday, November 6, 2009

Pegg, Paxon & Springer Funeral Chapel
4675 SW Watson Ave
Beaverton, OR 97005

Viewing – 8:30 AM
Holy Mass – 9:30 AM
Saturday, November 7, 2009

Holy Trinity Catholic Church

Beaverton, Oregon 97005

Our heartfelt condolences to the Europa family!

Please come and attend any of the service above to show our support. We appreciate it if you could pass on the information to those who may know the family.

"Eternal rest grant unto her O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen"

God Bless,
Monette

Sto Nino / Sinulog Festival at Mt. Angel Abbey

The seminarians are now preparing for the feast of Santo Nino at Mt. Angel Abbey. The festivity will be held on Saturday, January 16th, at 11:00 AM. Last Year, the large attendance of our kababayans from different parts of Oregon filled the Damian Center. To our surprise, the Sinulog performance was a big hit. With popular demand, the seminarians at Mt. Angel Abbey are requesting the presence of the Sinulog performers to make another offering dance for the feast of our beloved Santo Nino. The practices for the Sinulog will be on Sundays, November 8th, 15th, 22th and 29th, from 4:15 PM to 6:00PM, at Holy Trinity Catholic church. Since December is a very hectic month for everyone, will skip the practices and it will resume on Sunday, January 10th the same place and time. Kindly click this link http://www.h-t.org/ for directions.
