Sister Socorro Sandoval's Schedule of Funeral Services

Our beloved Franciscan Filipina Nun, Sister Mary Socorro Sandoval
of Our Lady of Peace Retreat House in Beaverton
passed away last Tuesday night, February 17th.
On behalf of the Filipino Community,
we extend our condolences to her family. We will certainly miss her!

I remembered the first time I met Sister Socorro when I attended the daily mass at the convent. She posses a joyful spirit. Sister easily enveloped me with her loving embrace and listened so intently when we talked. She was very warm and supportive to our Filipino religous events and she was always made a point to be present to our celebrations. She has a great devotion to our Lord Jesus and she is very fond of Mama Mary who always honor her in praying the Rosary. She was very instrumental in forming the Legion of Mary Ministry here in Beaverton. I remembered when the replica of Our Lady of Fatima was in town for her pilgrimage, Sister was very happy to organize the celebration at the Retreat House. She invited the Filipino Community Choir and extend the invitations to the entire community who filled up their chapel. She will be remembered as a kind, loving and gentle Filipina Franciscan Nun.

Lord, may Your perpetual light shine upon her
and grant her eternal rest.
May her soul rest in peace.

"May the choir of Angels come to greet you,
May they speed you to Paradise!
May the Lord enfolds you in his mercy.
May you find eternal life. Amen!"

Rodel & Amanda Flores' Concert

I had the privilege last summer in attending Rodel and the other artists in our community who performed in the "Tertulia Concert" to benefit the building of the DAMABANA, The Filipino Shrine at the Grotto. The concert was spectacular and I enjoyed it very much. They even received an standing ovation from the crowd. This upcoming concert is another opportunity to hear him play his violin again and it is for a good cause. Please see below detailed information from his wife Marem.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please join my family for a special concert on February 28, Saturday, 7 pm, at the Montavilla United Methodist Church on 232 SE 80th, Portland, OR.

My husband Rodel will play the violin with Amanda, our 13 year old daughter, on the piano. Both will serenade you with light classics (such as Pachelbel's Canon and Vivaldi's Spring from Four Seasons) and beloved standards (such as Somewhere Over the Rainbow and Gershwin's I Got Rhythm). Rodel is an accomplished violinist, a former scholar of the Vienna Academy of Music in Austria and soloist and concertmaster for orchestras in Asia and Europe. He is also a dedicated violin teacher, and has presented his students in several recitals. Amanda had her first solo piano recital when she was 7. Since then, she has performed other recitals, and has been a soloist for Mozart's Piano Concerto with the Cebu Chamber Orchestra. She is currently a piano scholar of the Snowman Foundation of Portland.

The concert is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Optimist Club of Lloyd Center. The club sponsors enrichment activities for children from Portland Public Schools, in line with the club's mission of "bringing out the best in kids." More information about the Optimists can be found at http://www.pnwoptimist.org/.

I have attached a flyer with this e-mail. Tickets are at $15. I really, really hope you, your family, and your friends can come.

Thank you and see you soon,

Marem

Olympian of our Faith

Olympian of our Faith
(Theme from Saint Paul’s life Journey)
Monette Mallari © 08/08/08

There’re mysteries that we can’t explain.
There’re sufferings that we can contain.
There’s lots of joy that we have shared.
There’s lots of love beyond compare.

Many miracles you have performed:
You rescued people when there’s storm,
healed the blindness of vicious Saul,
renewed his life and named him Paul.

Paul chose to take the long journey.
He was persecuted by many.
He wrote letters to the Romans,
Corinthians, also Philippians.

Who is the Olympian of our faith?
it's Saint Paul who finished the race.
He was borned in the town of Tarsus
and preached to the people in Ephesus,

Who helped to spread the Good News?
His beloved friends Timothy and Titus.
Despite the persecution on the land,
They spread the Gospel hand in hand.

Like Saint Paul, help us go everywhere,
we want to serve you anywhere.
Let us walk with you hand in hand.
May our lights shine all over the land.

We seek to dwell in your house, my God,
nothing will separate us from your love.
We’ll walk together to praise you, God,
and richly bless us with your love!

Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity
Monette Mallari © 08/11/08

It's awesome to see Almighty Father's creation.
There’re superb works all over the nation.
Crater Lake, Niagara Falls, and Yellow Stone,
Their beauty are really well known.

It's incredible when Jesus was around.
Great miracles happened in every town.
The lame walks straight and the blind sees.
He loved without limit grand like the sea.

It's amazing when the Holy Spirit is at work,
His fire of love is like a blazing torch.
Be ready when he breathes into our souls,
His powerful presence will transform us all.

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are one.
Imagine working together united as one.
When we surrender to Him our lives,
God's graces overflows and gladens our hearts!

Spiritual Toolbox

Spiritual Toolbox
(Based from Fr. Dave Gutmann’s homily)
Monette Mallari © 08/11/08

Our pastor had a great homily
when we went to church very early.
He has a toolbox in his office,
the tools are handy for the novice.

He suggested to everyone
that every household should have one,
a toolbox that enrich our lives,
also to share and touch other lives.

He showed first the old crucifix
that can drive out bad spirit,
the never tangled rosary,
and bottled water that is holy.

A bible that can be used easily,
and a prayer book he reads daily.
A prayer card can be use simply
in our spiritual journey.

The question he asked to everyone,
what can you add in the Toolbox?
Paper and pencil are what I’ll add
to write my poems as I’m inspired!

What about you my dearest friend,
What can you add in the Toolbox?

Sevenfold Gift

Sevenfold Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Monette Mallari © 08/02/08

Father send forth the spirit of your grace,
Also the sevenfold gift with your embrace.
Bestow the gift of wisdom to see you clearly,
And the gift of counsel to follow you dearly.

Pour out the gift of fortitude to strengthen me,
And the gift of understanding to enlighten me.
Let the gift of knowledge imparts in me,
While the gift of piety remains with me.

Bestow the gift of fear to shun all iniquity
And avoid all danger of offending your Majesty.
The mighty power of your Spirit has moved indeed,
While helping all your children who are in need.

To you O’ Lord I open my heart.
To you O’ Lord I entrust my life.
Surely, the love of Christ is my desire!
Holy Spirit set my heart on fire!

PROVERBS "SALAWIKAIN"

PROVERBS: Proverbs or sayings "salawikain" in tagalog are part of one's cultural heritage which should not be taken for granted nor forgotten...and are good sources of information about old traditions, beliefs, customs, and ways.

Ubus-ubos biyaya, pagkatapos nakatunganga.
Ano man ang gagawin, makapitong iisipin.
Hangga't makitid ang kumot, magtiis mamaluktot.
Magsisi ka man at huli wala nang mangyayari.
Mahuli man at magaling, naihahabol din.
Balat man at malinamnam, hindi mo matitikman.
Matalino man ang matsing, napaglalalangan din.
Batang puso, madaling marahuyo.
Kapag may isinuksok, may madudukot.
