Gawad Kalinga founder promotes GK’s concept & vision in Toronto

The major direction of Gawad Kalinga is to look at the poor in the Philippines with respect and justice and at the same time, to build more houses for the poor for the next years to come, according to Antonio M. Meloto, GK's founder. Meloto who was in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on October28 to October 29, 2010, said that the rich and wealthy people in the country are now starting to embrace the poor by donating lands for the Gawad Kalinga for which houses will be constructed for the people families…

Wealth in Canada

Every time I open my blackberry -- which friends say is most of the time -- I am now reminded of the abundance of a laid back country where it came from which for so long has only been for me an appendage of their powerful and more flamboyant neighbor in North America. My latest addiction, I just found out, is from Waterloo, Canada…

Hecky: The Genius is My Hero

In my amazing journey I am blessed to walk with heroes every day. Their company keeps me happy, sustains my energy and lights my way. Daily I am inspired by the constancy of this caring and doing army of countless country-lovers, hope-weavers and dream-builders in GK, ordinary citizens without claim to immense power, vast property or money, armed only with the audacity not to accept poverty as their shameful legacy and the integrity not to embrace corruption as the way to scandalous prosperity. One stands out among many -- Hector Villanueva or simply Hecky to me…

Later... Later

I met Hecky in May 2008 in San Diego. Our shared passion for Gawad Kalinga and our adoption journey made our paths cross many more times in the last 30 months. Hecks, thank you for being the person that you were… you are an inspiration to me and so many others. You took the road less traveled and in the process, you made the people around you better versions of themselves. Yours is a life well lived. You so generously shared yourself with everyone. You challenged us, high school Batch 85, to blaze the trail and make our mark in the building of our nation. You used your God-given talents so well in all your endeavors for the environment, our country, and the world…

Gawad Kalinga: On Being Moved

Currently a bum droning in the quarter-life crisis hive, I tagged along with my GK-community nurse friend, Carmz Lopez, with the objective of wanting to help build roofs and paint walls. As a first-time builder, together with the other 150+ volunteers, we stowed away with our heavy bags, camp gear, and likely a few doubts on how safe the place is or if we could really finish building the roofs. Those paraded our minds on board the 12-hour road trip to Tumauini, and then we fell asleep…

Build homes and help build lives. Be there at the Bayani Challenge 2011 from April 4 to 9 in Banatayan Island, Cebu.
